| Far and away this is the most intimidating task new players face. Even some old hands at rp have trouble getting going so I figure this to be a good place to start. So where do you begin? That has many answers, but usually the best answer is to ask a question. "What sounds interesting to me?" Have you ever read a book or watched a movie that had a character that you just connected with? As Mark Twain said, "Genius borrows nobely". Dont hesitate to borrow some aspect of a character that you like. Just dont completely copy one. Now at this point people usually dive into the name and background. If you can do that, great, but if you're like the rest of us you may need some help. This is a technique I have used, it may sound weird to anyone who hasn't tried to write fiction, but it works. Start by thinking of a room. We have all seen interogation rooms on tv, thats a good one. Now we are dealing with the middle ages here, so lets mix that in. So we are in a dark room, lit by torches on the wall. Now lets throw in some detail. Notice I haven't went to the character yet, we'll get there. Ok detail, picture this room, we said interogation room so lets throw in a warped wooden table in the center of the room, and some odd looking chains and torture instruments on the wall. With me, good. So now lets add two chairs at the table. In one sits our character. What are they wearing, what color hair, or skin or eyes do they have. Describe them in as much detail as you can. Now picture yourself taking the other seat. It's time to get down to business. Start asking them questions. No I'm not crazy try it, you will be surprised. At first you will answer for them, but over time the answers will surprise you, because they won't be yours, they will be the characters. So what, you ask, do you ask. Start simple, do they have any family? Where are they from. But remember to watch thier answers. They don't want to answer, fine, why? Not speaking can have a couple of reasons. They are reclusive. Well then you know they are not going to have many friends right? Or they are just being stand offish?Well is it because they are strong willed, or are they hiding something. By now you should be getting the Idea. Just keep questioning untill you get the answers you want. After all, they are your character, they aren't going anywhere untill you let them, so they will talk. So anyway, this should get you started. If you are still having trouble, post here, or feel free to pm me or corner me in chat and i'll be glad to help. After all, I play a bard, and stories are what I do..... | |
